WHO WE ARE

Since the 1960s, the Gigante family has had its name linked to Fattoria La Traiana, a landmark in the Chianti region of Terranuova Bracciolini: 120 hectares of which 65 are used as vineyards. Giandomenico and Paola, brother and sister, have been breathing essences of wine since they were born. “With my father Pietro we used to come to the coast, to Bolgheri, once a year … I am familiar with the Etruscan coast also because I had a girlfriend in Marina di Castagneto Carducci”. Giandomenico remembers with pleasure Tuscany’s mild climate which opens towards the blue light of the sea and the islands. “We toyed with the idea of making wine in the land of Carducci and Sassicaia but in the end we arrived in the Val di Cornia, in Suvereto”. Pietro Gigante’s intuition went against the tide. The Bolgheri brand was on the rise but he had seen important values in Suvereto. “My father had very clear ideas. Selling the bottle is challenging and can be good or bad. It’s better to focus on the agricultural activity, trying to produce the best grapes or the best wine. The soils of Bolgheri were sandy and so the choice fell on the Val di Cornia where there is a strong minerality and the characteristics are well suited to the cultivation of Cabernet and Syrah which have exceptional results here”. The first vines are planted in 2002 and the first Suveretan harvest was the one in 2004. Giandomenico has a weakness for Pugnitello: “It is a native version of Merlot, it has a strong personality that gave exceptional results here after six or seven years, from the fourth harvest “. Sasso Orlando continues on the path indicated by Pietro, that is to produce high quality bulk wine and not to exceed ten thousand bottles. There are three wines produced in Suvereto: White with White Sauvignon; Rosé of Pugnitello, Red of Cabernet Sauvignon.                    Paola speaks of wine as an important value: “It is precious because it is an ancient pleasure. Wine is also spoken of in sacred texts. In the Bible and in the Gospel, wine is a deep root that binds us to the past; a root that produces pleasure, joy, identity “.               What does Suvereto represent in Giandomenico’s imagination? “Starting from the village and exploring the Val di Cornia is a journey that can be summarized in three words: kalòs kai agathòs, or the perfect coincidence between beauty and good which for the Greeks was considered a divine gift. It could be a childish concept but when I started wandering around this countryside, I thought that the Greeks had been to Suvereto where the land is the cradle of good products that tell the beauty of living here “.

For Paola Suvereto is poetry: “There are two places where I feel the Genius loci: the medieval fortress and the road of Cancellini, at the foot of Monte Calvi; as in my dreams I see myself from the outside immersed in beauty “.
